HDC/Cut Flower Centre Open Day

1 August 2013

5.00pm – 9.00pm

J A Collison and Sons, Tuxhill Farm, Hay Green, Terrington St Clement, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE34 4PX and the National Cut Flower Centre, Rookery Farm, Joys Bank, Holbeach St Johns, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE12 8SG

With a further five years of HDC funding in place the Cut Flower Centre (CFC) is now able to move forward with a wider remit than in previous years.  The new product development role, remains as an important aspect of the trials plan but will now be complemented with problem solving work in established mainstream crops.   As part of this wider role there are a number of trials that are being conducted on growers holdings (under the management of the CFC) including: a column stock variety trial, column stocks Fusarium susceptibility trial and a spectral filters demonstration trial.  This year’s open day has been timed to enable the column stocks trials at J A Collison and Sons to be viewed prior to viewing the trials at the CFC.   Trials at the main CFC site include a fully replicated trial of the new ‘Breathus’ and ‘Solomio’ carnations that generated a lot of interest at last year’s open day, demonstration plots of various perennials (including a blacked out Aster ericoides trial), and variety trials for bloom asters, lilies and sunflowers along with plots of ‘Katz’ column stocks.  New product trials in 2013 include: basil, Cosmos, lupin, Trachelium and Zinnia.   This event will provide growers with a good overview of the HDC funded work in progress within the CFC project in 2013 as well as an important opportunity to contribute to the planning for future work within the cut flower sector.  The programme starts at J A Collison and Sons (Tuxhill Farm) at 17.00 to view the stocks variety and Fusarium susceptibility trials and will then move to the main CFC site at Rookery Farm for an update on the wider range of work within the project.   We will also round off the event with a hog roast and an opportunity to have an informal discussion about the CFC as well as the industry in general.
