Here we go again (Week 17 update)

Its that time of year again when we get the Spanish tunnels out of “mothballs” and begin another season of trials at the CFC.

We have now got the tunnels skinned, the soil steam sterilised (thank you Mr Collison and his crew) and the first of the trials planted ie some “hot off the press” brand new varieties of Leucanthemum bred and supplied by Realflor.  We only have about 20 plants of each but we are reliably informed that it is product that is currently “on trend” (not my expression as those who know me will appreciate) so it will be interesting to see how they perform!

After managing to get the outdoor “swamp” ploughed after the monsoon winter, it has now dried like concrete so it will take some working to get it ready for planting in a couple of weeks time!

We had hoped to leave our single span Haygrove tunnel covered all winter with a view to determine how early it was possible to flower an overwintered crop of Breanthus and Solomio.  Unfortunately mother nature had a different idea and the Autumn gales destroyed the cover which resulted in this trial having to be abandoned!
