Week 29 (2016) update

The very hot weather this week has brought on the column stock variety trial (see photos below)  and it now looks more likely that they will be in flower for the Open Day on the 10th of August.

The Craspedia have begun to flower this week and samples have been sent to local packers etc.  Stem strength and length are certainly not an issue but the small size of the flower may well limit its uses.

And you can’t win them all!  The varieties of Gomphrena that we sourced are flowering at about a foot tall and do not seem to be suitable for cut flowers  (see photos below). The only light at the end of the tunnel with this one is a variety from Burpee supplied by Simon Crawford which seem to making a longer stem length than the others – so watch this space.

The first flush of the Trick delphinium was complete by the end of this week and the plants have now been cut back, top dressed and been given a thorough drenching in order to encourage the second flush.
